This past week, the students, staff and parents of the American International School of Nouakchott, as well as many embassy staff, gathered at the local stadium to try and save a life. A Mauritanian boy with liver disease is in need of surgery; it's too complex to be done here, so he will have to go to another country to have the surgery performed. The medical and travel expenses are expected to be over $10000, far more than his family can afford.
To raise money and help this child, the school held a Lap-a-thon, in which the students could run or walk for 90 minutes. The students had gathered sponsors and donations for this good cause, and they were very enthusiastic about the day. Nick jogged 23 laps (almost 6 miles); only one other student did more! Olivia did 13 laps and little Alex did 11. Following the lap-a-thon, the kids enjoyed healthy snacks and then had fun doing some sprint races and other games.

Thank you to AISN students, staff & parents, and US Embassy Nouakchott!
